Listing description
The Barracks Arcadia 2 accommodates four guests in two bedrooms, with one queen bed and two single beds, and has one bathroom with a shower. Ceiling fans run throughout, and linen is provided. The kitchen includes an oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, kettle, toaster, dishes and silverware. There is a dining table, TV and DVD player.
Shared outdoor facilities include an outdoor swimming pool with sun lounges, a covered gazebo barbecue area with tables and seating, and outdoor furniture. A communal laundry has a washer and dryer. Free street parking is available.
The building was constructed by the Australian Army during the Second World War to accommodate soldiers working on The Forts. Its formerly open verandah facing the lane has since been enclosed. The separate house to the east was the Commandant’s residence and is now on a separate land holding. After Cyclone Althea in 1971, the barracks accommodated the Arcadian Surf Lifesavers after their Alma Bay premises were destroyed. The building has since been renovated for holiday stays.
The unit is in a quiet, leafy cul-de-sac one street from the water, a short stroll from Alma Bay’s sheltered swimming beach and park. A newsagent, corner store, fish and chip shop and island tavern are nearby.
